Firefighter Fatally Injured On First Skydive

Parachute Suffered A 'Major Malfunction'

A Trenton, MO firefighter was fatally injured Saturday when his parachute suffered what local authorities described as a "major malfunction."

Lt. Eric Lorenz, 30, was on his first skydive when the accident occurred.

Television station KSHB reports that Lt. Lorenz had gone along with another firefighter on Saturday. "He was interested in the sport," according to Trenton Fire Chief Rick Morris.

There are few other details about the accident available. The Kansas City Star reports that Morris called Lorenz one of the best firefighters he had ever known, and that he could have worked for much larger departments but wanted to serve his hometown. He said he thought Lorenz could have become Fire Chief in Trenton one day.

Lorenz is survived by a wife and two sons, aged 3 and 1.
