EDO Floats To Build Floats For Chinese Aircraft

First Harbin Y-12 To Arrive In Seattle Soon

A Seattle company is designing and building floats specifically for the conversion of the Chinese Harbin Y-12 airplane to a seaplane.

The EDO Floats division of Kenmore Air Harbor is designing the floats, and hopes to achieve FAA certification for the floats.

The Seattle Business Journal reports that the FAA has already certified the land version of the Y-12, but converting it into a seaplane will require additional certification. The aircraft can carry 18 passengers and is built by China's AVIC Harbin Aircraft Industry Group.

The Y-12 is similar in appearance to the de Havilland Twin Otter. Kenmore operates a fleet of the Canadian aircraft, along with the deHavilland Beaver.

The first Y-12 is expected to arrive at Kenmore's facility in June, and certification of the floats is expected to take about six months, according to the report.
