Southwest Declares Operational Emergency

Says An 'Unusually High' Number Of Planes Were Taken Out Of Service For Maintenance

Southwest Airlines said on Friday it was declaring an "operational emergency" as it took an unusually high number of airplanes out of service through the week.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the airline said in a news release it had issued an "all hands on deck" order for its maintenance workers. Management threatened any maintainer who did not show up with the loss of his or her job, according to a memo obtained by the paper.

Southwest normally has about 20 planes grounded for maintenance issues on any given day, according to the report, but that number doubled each day last week. The airline said there is no common theme running through the issues.

“To take care of our Customers, we are requiring all hands on deck to address maintenance items so that we may promptly return aircraft to service,” Southwest said in the news release. “At the same time, our operational planners have been working in the background to minimize the impact to our Customers.”
