Navy, Marines Look To Modernize Using UAVs

Wants Unmanned Systems To Be 'The New Normal', According to Navy Official

The Navy wants the use of UAVs to be "the new normal", according to Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for unmanned systems, Frank Kelley.

Speaking at the AUVSI Unmanned Systems Defense 2016, Kelly said his year-old office is preparing a tactical roadmap for Navy unmanned systems that will involve input from the industry.

Kelly said the objective is to "put the Navy in the position … to be able to develop and field unmanned systems at will, when we want to, not when we’re told to or when there is no other option." He foresees synergy between manned and unmanned systems.

The roadmap will include plans for the accelerated acquisition of unmanned systems, and promote acceptance among the public and Navy personnel.

Marine Commanding General Robert S. Walsh said the Marine Corps is also looking to add more unmanned systems.
