Airborne 10.13.14: Embraer L500/450 Progress, NASA Wants U, Afghan Scrap Planes

Embraer broke ground last Thursday on its Legacy 500 and Legacy 450 assembly complex in Melbourne, Florida. At the ceremony, which included Florida Governor Rick Scott, and Brevard County and city officials, the Company celebrated this significant addition to its existing 212,000 square-foot campus at Melbourne International Airport.

NASA is inviting the public to send their names on a microchip to destinations beyond low-Earth orbit, including Mars. Your name will begin its journey on a dime-sized microchip when the agency's Orion spacecraft launches December 4th on its first flight, designated Exploration Flight Test-1. The Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction has sent a letter to the Secretary of the Air Force questioning the scrapping of 16 apparently airworthy G.222 aircraft by an Afghan construction company for six cents per pound… that’s about $32,000 for all 16 planes.
