Retired USAC Sprint Car Driver Fatally Injured In Accident Friday

Tony Elliot Was Travelling To A Football Game At Clemson

Retired USAC Sprint Car driver Tony Elliot was among four people fatally injured when the Piper PA-32R-301 they were aboard went down Friday en route to Clemson, SC to attend the Clemson-Notre Dame football game.

The Associated Press reports that the wreckage of the airplane was discovered near Lake Hartwell on the border between Georgia and South Carolina. Along with Elliot, 54, those fatally injured were  Charles Smith, 71; his son Scott Smith, 44; and Scott Bibler, 51, according to Oconee County, SC Coroner Karl Addis.

The four had departed from Warsaw, IN to travel to the game. The FAA's preliminary accident report says only that the plane went down under "unknown circumstances."

FAA records indicate that the plane was registered to Smith Family Aviation LLC of Warsaw, IN. It's most recent airworthiness certificate for the 1984-model airplane was issued in 2011, and expired in 2017.
