Uncertain Fuel Costs Prompt Surcharge

Canada's WestJet Calls it Like It Is

WestJet announced that it will implement a temporary fuel surcharge effective January 10, 2003. The airline will continue with its non-traditional method of collecting fees by implementing this surcharge based on a method of distance flown.

Guests travelling trips under 300 miles will see a $5 each way surcharge; for trips of 301-1000 miles, $7; and for trips of over 1000 miles, $10. [All figures are in Canadian dollars --ed.]

WestJet's Vice President of Marketing and Sales, Bill Lamberton, said today: "With the recent significant rise in fuel prices and a diminished amount of our fuel protected under our previous pricing arrangement, it is with much regret that we find ourselves forced to implement a temporary fuel surcharge.

"To minimize the impact on our ultra-short haul route network, and to be more equitable to those guests flying shorter distances, we will implement this fee on a tiered basis. We are committed to removing this additional surcharge once fuel prices decline."

Guests can avoid paying the fuel surcharge by booking their WestJet travel prior to January 10, 2003.
