In this video, Executive Vice President for Hartzell Propeller, J.J. Frigge, introduces us to Hartzell’s line of composite propeller blades. The tried-and-true wood propellers have been a source of thrust since the Wright brothers, and within 10 years of the first powered flight metal blades were brought into use. Now, composite propeller blade technology can provide greater propeller blade performance and longer life.
Hartzell uses two composite technologies to produce their propeller blades. One of these technologies is similar to what we have seen in other composite applications. The technology they apply to the larger blades uses carbon fibers in a more sophisticated production process. Because the larger blades used on airline size turboprops must withstand continuous use, they are designed to have a lifespan capability that is almost unlimited.
This video provides an interesting insight into both technologies used to produce this key component of the aircraft.
