Karibu Is Welcome No More

There's low cost... and then there's low rent. Herman Kaizer once billed himself as the CEO of Africa's first low-fare airline, Karibu Airways... but maybe the fares were a little too low.

News reports from Tanzania say Kaizer, a Polish national, and his wife skipped the country last month owing more than $1,700 dollars in hotel bills. Moreover, Karibu's (the word means "welcome") lone plane, a Boeing 737-200 named "Ahmed", has been grounded by the Tanzanian Civil Aviation Authority.

Karibu's operating certificate has also been revoked, and the company that leased the plane to Kaizer -- Conway Aviation -- has canceled the lease. That leaves Kaizer's airplane operation without an airplane... meaning, it's not much of an operation anymore.

And its CEO is now out of pocket.

Karibu once advertised fares as low as $19 between Dar es-Salaam and Zanzibar. Other airlines charge $58.
