Greater Lawrence Technical School in Andover, Massachusetts is joining the number of schools expanding their operations to address the shortage of qualified aeronautical personnel. The school is a 4-year tech high school serving the local communities of Andover, Lawrence, and Methuen, and they're moving into a new hangar at the Lawrence Municipal Airport to provide instruction regarding aircraft maintenance. Kenny Keller, a 23-year rotary wing instruction veteran, has published his own take on teaching students to meet and exceed PPL standards in helicopter operation. Robert Stangarone Appointed to Corporate Angel Network

Nonprofit Updates Leadership to Ring in 2024

The Corporate Angel Network, a nonprofit organization that provides cancer patients free transportation on corporate aircraft to travel to specialized medical facilities, has installed Robert Robert Stangarone as its President and CEO. The Network has allowed operators and patients to match up for more than 68,000 flights since its 1981 founding. The new leadership was reportedly driven by Stangarone's resume in aviation already, bringing experience as a corporate exec, journo, and pilot.

Appellate Court To SmartSky... Nuh-Uh!

District Court Denial of SmartSky Attempt to Prevent Gogo From Selling its 5G Solution Upheld

ANN has learned that the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has upheld a decision by the United States District Court for the District of Delaware in denying SmartSky Networks’ motion for a preliminary injunction against Gogo Business Aviation to keep it from selling its Gogo 5G product. The Delaware court found that SmartSky failed to establish that it is likely to succeed on the merits of its claims and that it is likely to suffer irreparable harm if a preliminary injunction is not granted. The reviewing court, the Federal Circuit, in this case, affirmed that decision.

Oshkosh to Host Pair of Military Demo Teams in First for History

The Italian Air Force's Frecce Tricolori is set to make its first Oshkosh appearance since 1986 when it shows up to this summer's EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. The 71st edition of the Experimental Aircraft Association fly-in will be held from July 22-28 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The Italian team, technically referred to as the 313th Aerobatic Training Squadron, is scheduled to perform on Tuesday, July 23rd. It's a rare showing for the team, only the third time it's ever gone out on a North American Tour.

Embraer Announces 2023 Results

Profitable Year Sees 181 Aircraft Deliveries Against $1.2B Backlog

Embraer released its end of year numbers for 2023, and things are apparently pretty good down in Brazil - the firm capped the year with 181 aircraft deliveries for a 13% increase over 2022. Embraer capped the year with a book to bill excess of 1.3 to 1, representing a backlog of $4.3 billion and a $400 million increase over the previous year. The firm delivered 74 light jets, setting a 7-year record for itself in the process. Similarly, its medium jet offerings were popular, too, with 41 delivered to the tune of 14% growth over 2022.

Next Batch Bound for ISS Drawn Sets Off by August

Four crew will be making their way to the International Space Station aboard the Crew Dragon Spacecraft in late Summer to join Expedition 71 and 72 members above. The team will include NASA personnel Zena Cardman, Pilot Nick Hague, and Mission Specialist Stephanie Wilson, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Mission Specialist Aleksandr Gorbunov. After launching "no later than" August, the crew will undergo a short duration handover with their Crew-8 predecessors.

GlobalX Looks to Expand A321 Freighter Options

CAE signed a deal with Global Crossing Airlines - or GlobalX, as is commonly shortened - to deploy and operate an Airbus A320 family full-flight simulator in their Miami, Florida facility. The new sim is scheduled to be ready for training this quarter and will help to bolster Global Crossing's efforts to expand its A321 freighter fleet. The FFS is scheduled to be ready for training in the first quarter of 2024 to support GlobalX’s ongoing growth and the expansion of its Airbus A321 freighter fleet. The carrier operates as a passenger and charter line, only recently adding the freight capability to its fleet in 2023.

...Loss Of Airplane Control While Performing Aerobatic Maneuvers, Which Resulted In The Airplane Entering An Inverted Flat Spin

Analysis: The accident flight was part of a training and demonstration flight that included a series of aerobatic maneuvers. Flight track data for the accident flight revealed that the airplane departed and maneuvered for about 7 minutes before impacting terrain almost directly under the last data point. No linear ground scar was observed at the accident site, which was indicative of the airplane having descended nearly vertically to ground impact. Additionally, the wreckage was found in an inverted orientation.
