Coast Guard Investigates Weekend Mishap Off CA Coast

Dolphin Goes Down During Boating Rescue

The Coast Guard Tuesday began its inquiry into the weekend crash of a Eurocopter HH-65B Dolphin (file photo of type, below) off the California coast.

The aircraft was involved in the rescue of four people Sunday from a capsized boat in the waters off Humbolt County, near Samoa Beach, the Eureka (CA) Times-Standard reported.

Two people on board the 18-foot long fishing boat died when it rolled over in heavy surf. The Dolphin, dispatched to pull the two remaining survivors out of the water, went down in the surf.

All three crewmembers onboard the stricken helicopter escaped. The fourth crewman, a rescue swimmer, was already in the water when the helo went down.

The two remaining passengers on the fishing boat were also pulled to safety.
