Investigators Shuttled In To View Internal NASA Communications

New Team Brought In To Kirtland AFB

One of NASA's shuttle investigation board members says a new team will take a look at the space agency's internal communications.

As ANN has reported since Columbia disintegrated upon re-entry, Feb. 1, some engineers say their concerns over damage to the space plane's left wing never reached top NASA officials before the Columbia disaster.

Major General Kenneth Hess says the new team will help three other groups looking into structural design, operations and technical aspects of the shuttle.

Hess, an air crash expert stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base (NM), says the investigation is "applying the basic principles of a plane mishap investigation" to the February first shuttle wreck.

Hess says about 24-thousand pieces of wreckage have been recovered, but just a-thousand have been put together in a model of the shuttle.
