US Pressures Israel Into Canceling Venezuelan Air Force Upgrades

Israel Was To Install New Systems In Venezuelan F-16s

It's a deal that would have made Israel a lot of money. But it would have also made Israel's number-one financial backer -- the US -- mighty mad. So in the end, officials in Jerusalem took a pass on a contract to upgrade Venezuela's fleet of F-16 fighters.

The Bush administration considers Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to be a destabilizing, hostile leader. Chavez has a long-running relationship with Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Israeli media weren't specific on the upgrades proposed for the Venezuelan Air Force, but made it clear that this was the latest in a series of clashes between the military-industrial establishments in Washington and Jerusalem.

Five years ago, Israel, under pressure from the US, canceled a multi-million dollar sale of PHALCON reconnaissance planes to China. Earlier this year, the US complained loudly about Israel's plans to upgrade China's Harpy drones.
