Airborne 08.26.19: Electric Air Racer, Moon Prize?, B-2 Anniversary

Also: Volocopter's New UAMA, Indian Aviatrix, Selfies Over Ditched Plane?, Jazz Aviation

Condor Aviation has made its name building and testing modifications to light aircraft. Now, thrilled by the challenge of electric flight, Team Condor—eight engineers from Condor Aviation—is applying that same expertise to create a customized electric aircraft for Air Race E.

Condor Aviation’s airfield site underwent major renovation and now houses a full engineering shop that designs, builds and tests modifications to light aircraft. If air racing provides a boost to battery technology—as F1 has done for fuel efficiency and KERS—that can only be a good thing. It's well known that space travel is difficult, and expensive. But former Speaker of the U.S. House Newt Gingrich is proposing that the U.S. government offer a $2 billion prize to a private company that can establish a lunar base. Gingrich, along with others who are skeptical of NASA's ambitious plan to return to the Moon by 2024, want to see if private companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin can establish such a base faster and less expensively than NASA, according to a summary of the plan. NASA's return to the Moon is estimated to cost $50 billion or more. Thirty years ago, an oddly-shaped and dark-colored new plane took to the sky for the first time at the legendary Plant 42 in Palmdale, California. That plane, the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, went on to join the U.S. Air Force’s fleet and has been a staple of the nation’s global air power dominance ever since. The B-2’s manufacturer, Northrop Grumman, hosted an event to mark the B-2’s 30th anniversary of its first flight at an event at Plant 42, Aug. 20. Hundreds of employees, local leaders and military guests were on hand on the event, which included Maj. Gen. James Dawkins, 8th Air Force and Joint-Global Strike Operations commander. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
