South Korean Tiltrotor UAV Conducts Successful Ship Trials

Took Off And Landed From A Korea Coast Guard Ship While Underway

The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) has conducted successful underway trials of its TR-60 tiltrotor UAV, according to a statement from the company.

Janes reports that the 440 pound aircraft took off and landed on the flight deck of a Korea Coast Guard vessel making 10 knots on July 7. KARI said in the statement that the flight test confirmed the possibility of the TR-60 operating from a vessel, and that the UAV can be used in a number of areas, including intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, search-and-rescue operations, transport, communication, and relay.

A production-ready version of the TR-60 was first shown at the DX Korea land warfare exhibition in 2016, Janes reports. It is manufactured using lightweight composites, has a 10-foot wingspan, and a MTOW of about 460 pounds, according to KARI's published specifications.

The aircraft has a cruising speed of about 135 knots and can fly up to 14,763 feet.
