ERAU Seminole Banged Up In Landing Mishap

Student Pilot, Instructor OK; Plane, Not So Much

A twin-engine Piper PA44 Seminole is a little worse for wear, after a student pilot and his instructor from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University had some problems landing at Daytona Beach International last week.

Airport spokesman Steve Cooke said the student flew his approach too low, and bounced on landing. The plane (file photo of type, right) departed the runway, struck a runway sign and came to rest in the grass alongside, its nosewheel collapsed.

"When he tried to land the plane, it bounced and it went off the runway," Cooke said. "But that's not uncommon with student pilots. At least no one was hurt."

Orlando's WESH-2 reports the aircraft suffered severe damage to its nose and right wing.
