Abilene Regional Airport Gets FAA Grant

Projects Already Identified For $6.9 Million In Federal And Local Funds

Abilene Regional Airport (KABI) has been awarded an FAA AIP grant of nearly $7 million for improvements to the airport's taxiways and design for a taxiway reconstruction project. The federal money will be supplemented by $345,000 from the local government.

Television station KTXS reports that airport director Don Green says there are two projects which could begin in weeks now that the grants have been authorized. Improvements are planned to taxiways that carry aircraft to tarmac areas, as well as American Eagle's maintenance facilities.

Green said that the projects should not affect operations at the airport. He said while there will be some runway closures during the planned 200 days of construction, the airport has sufficient capacity to continue to operate normally.

He said that the grant was originally expected no later than April, but "bickering in Washington" had delayed the award until now.
