Airborne 09.21.20: B-25 Down In CA, Ampaire Flies Again, UAL Agreement

We are still evaluating the information coming in on a crash in the central part of California state, near Stockton,  involving a WWII generation Mitchell Bomber that went down short of an airport and into an 'open' field, where an irrigation ditch, and other impediments, apparently caused serious damage to the airframe.  Three people were on the aircraft. Two were transported to a local hospital, and one was able to walk away. Ampaire has flown its second technology demonstrator. The aircraft is a refined version of its Cessna 337 “Electric EEL” hybrid-electric aircraft conversion. The company refers to the new flight

We are still evaluating the information coming in on a crash in the central part of California state, near Stockton,  involving a WWII generation Mitchell Bomber that went down short of an airport and into an 'open' field, where an irrigation ditch, and other impediments apparently caused serious damage to the airframe. The aircraft involved is a 1944 B-25J (and most recently categorized as an 'N' Model after rebuild), serial number 44-28938, registered to PROAIR HOLDING COMPANY LLC, LATHAM , NY, as N7946C. Ampaire Flies Second Hybrid-Electric Prototype

Test in Preparation for Flight Trials with Mokulele Airlines

Ampaire has flown its second technology demonstrator. The aircraft is a refined version of its Cessna 337 “Electric EEL” hybrid-electric aircraft conversion. The company refers to the new flight test aircraft as the Hawaii Bird, as it will be flown by Ampaire and Mokulele Airlines pilots on air routes in Hawaii later this year in a series of demonstration flights. When the aircraft flies on Maui, it will be the first time an electrically powered aircraft has flown under an FAA “market survey” experimental aircraft certificate in order to gain real-world flight experience.

Will Be Utilizing Frasca's Motion Cueing System For Fixed Wing Aircraft

Epic Flight Academy, of New Smyrna Beach, FL has taken delivery of a Frasca 172 Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD) with Frasca's Motion Cueing System for fixed wing devices (FMCS-FX). They are the first flight school to own and operate a general aviation device with this level of high fidelty motion. The AATD is the first of it's kind to include a six-axis motion base and high definition three channel wrap around visual systems, features typically not available on this level of device. FAA Welcomes More Schools Into the Collegiate Training Initiative

The UAS-CTI Program Was Launched in April 2020

The FAA's 2018 Reauthorization Act required the FAA to establish a collegiate training initiative program relating to UAS. The Unmanned Aircraft Systems Collegiate Training Initiative (UAS-CTI) Program was launched in April 2020 and addresses the Section 631 requirement of the FAA 2018 Reauthorization Act. Any public two-year institutions of higher education that participate in the UAS-CTI program will also be designated as members of the Consortium for Small Unmanned Aircraft System Technology Training. As such, the FAA has announced that 15 more schools have been selected to participate in the UAS Collegiate Training Initiative (UAS-CTI).

NTSB Prelim: Piper PA32R

The Airplane Was On Its First Flight After Maintenance Work Was Completed

On September 7, 2020, about 0810 central daylight time, a Piper PA-32R airplane, N3576X, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Bonham, Texas. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. According to the pilot, the airplane was on its first flight after maintenance work was completed, which included the replacement of the engine exhaust. Shortly after departure, the pilot noted high TIT and CHT temperatures. The pilot then decided to return to the airport; however, about 2 miles short of the airport, the engine experienced a total loss of power.
