Electric, Sustainable Flying Boat Chosen For Ferry Service
Southern Airways Express, one of the larger American commuter carriers, announced their intent to purchase 20 of Regent's Seaglider aircraft once available. The partnership between the two companies will see 15 Viceroys, the 12-passenger model, and 5 of the firm's 100-passenger Monarch. Southern Airways has paid deposits on the aircraft, which will eventually represent a $250 million value when the Seagliders are delivered.
The deal brings Regent's order books up over the $600 million mark, great news for their development of the next-gen all-electric project. Once completed, the Seaglider will combine elements of aviation and maritime vehicles, combining the best of both. Planned specifications should see a 180 nautical mile range at nearly 180 miles per hour using existing battery technology.
Southern Airways intends to use the planes to provide "harbor-to-harbor, overwater transportation at a fraction of the cost, noise, and emissions of existing regional transportation modes like aircraft and ferries. With operations nationwide, Southern Airways will focus its initial Seaglider service in its New York/New England and Southeastern U.S. markets, including Boston, Nantucket, Palm Beach, and Miami." The plan will use existing dock infrastructure for loading, where the plane will float and drive in on its retractable hydrofoil at speeds between 20-40 mph. As the plane exits the harbor, it smoothly accelerates, transitions onto its wing, retracts its foil, and flies in ground effect for maximum range.
“Regent is excited to deliver a more affordable, convenient, and sustainable option to Southern Airways customers,” said Billy Thalheimer, CEO of REGENT. “Southern is an industry leader in sustainable transportation and customer service. Our Seaglider will enhance its fleet capability and enable Southern to reaffirm its position as an innovator in regional travel.”
