Report: Airport Passenger Screening Systems A $10 Billion Business

New Visiongain Report Explores Security Needs Worldwide

In a report released Tuesday, London-based analysis firm Visiongain says that in 2011, the global expenditure on airport passenger screening systems is calculated to be $10 billion, a figure which is forecast to rise as current airport expansion plans continue.

The impetus for large-scale growth of the airport passenger screening systems market remains buoyed by rapid expansion of airport infrastructure to accommodate the projected substantial growth in global air traffic. Evolving security needs post 9/11, both within the leading U.S aviation security market and throughout the world, will ensure long-term viability for the market of airport passenger screening systems.

Large-scale expansion of existing airport capacity around the world, as well as a high number of new airports throughout the Middle East and Asia, are either planned or under construction to accommodate the rapid rise in global air traffic, China and leading airports in the Middle East, for example, are aggressively expanding capacity. Similarly, India is seeking to increase its commercial airports to create a system capable of handling up to four times its current capacity

According to the report, security concerns have become an essential part of airport and aviation operations. Aviation security is evolving to a layered approach that incorporates a range of technology. This model adjusts resources to evolving threats while minimizing impacts to airline operations or aviation economics.

The first line of defence in aviation security equipment is airport passenger screening systems. The following systems and technologies are being deployed for airport passenger screening:

  • Explosive Detection Systems (EDS)
  • Explosive Trace Detection (ETD)
  • Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT)
  • Millimetre Wave Scanners
  • Ion Mobility Spectrometers (IMS)
  • Backscatter X-Ray Technology

The report indicates that considerable expansion in airport capacity across the globe is a considerable driver for expenditure on airport passenger screening systems. Other key drivers to the airport passenger screening systems market are evolving regulation and technologies; the emergence of low-cost carriers in the developing aviation industries' of Asia Pacific and the Middle East; and a collective effort to integrate technologies to provide multi-layered security systems.
