Beefing Up Aviation Security Down Under

Australia Targets Regional Airports

Australia is beefing up aviation security at regional airports throughout the country, according to ABC Radio. The $35 million (US) package includes funding for four rapid-deployment federal police squads and closed circuit TV security systems for some airports.

"I think the announcement is inadequate," said the leader of the opposition Labor Party, Mark Latham. He told the ABC that regional airports were the weak links in aviation security and will continue to be so, even with the new initiative in place.

"The main thing they should be doing is putting the permanent screening devices into significant regional airports," Latham told the Australian radio network.

But Transport Minister John Anderson said handheld screening -- "wanding" -- is sufficient at regional airports. He doesn't believe bigger, permanent screening stations are required. "The assessments are that there is no heightened risk of that happening with regional aviation," he said. "But should it happen we now have much more robust arrangements in place to quickly respond."
