P-51 Lost At Duxford, UK, Air Show

One Plane Lost A Part Of Its Wing In A Mid-Air Collision With Skyraider

A P-51 flying as part of a formation at the Duxford, Cambridgeshire UK Flying Legends Air Show went down after a mid-air collision with another warbird.

Video posted by the BBC shows a flight of three airplanes performing as part of the show, when the Skyraider appears to hit the tail of the Mustang with its wing. The starboard wingtip of the Skyraider can be seen separating from the aircraft, but it was the P-51 which went down following the collision.

The pilot was fortunately able to bail out of the P-51 even though witnesses told the BBC that the accident occurred only about 100 feet off the ground. One said that the airplane seemed to "fall out of the sky."

The Skyraider landed safely. The P-51 went down southwest of the Imperial War Museum. The accident will be investigated by the Air Accident Investigations Branch.
