Near Miss Over The Caribbean

BWIA, AAL Flights Take Evasive Action

An American Airlines 757 had to take evasive action Saturday to avoid colliding with a BWIA 737 -- a possible mishap averted by TCAS systems and heads-up flying, according to the airlines and the FAA.

Aviation officials said the BWIA flight had just departed Miami, FL. On climb-out, controllers say they told the flight crew to maintain 7,000 feet -- but they received no acknowledgement.

AAL flight 2198 was reportedly level at 8,000 feet when its TCAS sounded. The 757 ascended abruptly while the BWIA 737 turned and nosed down.

The FAA won't say how close the two aircraft came -- but passengers aboard the BWIA flight bound for Barbados said they were able to see the logo on the AAL flight's tail. Passengers aboard the BWIA flight said there was a brief panic in the cabin, but order was quickly restored.
