AMA Drone Report 08.29.19: Drones 'n Weapons, UAS4STEM Nat'ls, UAV Paranoia

Also: SpaceX Drone Footage, University Agriculture, More Drone Restrictions, AMA Expo 2019

No one is above a little panic... not even the FAA.

The Feds are warning the general public that it is illegal to operate a drone with a dangerous weapon attached. Perhaps you’ve seen online photos and videos of drones with attached guns, bombs, fireworks, flamethrowers (though there are legitimate commercial uses for such things...), and other dangerous items. Do not consider attaching any items such as these to a drone because operating a drone with such an item may result in significant harm to a person and to your bank account. Operating a drone that has a dangerous weapon attached to it is a violation of Section 363 of the 2018 FAA Reauthorization Act enacted Oct. 5, 2018. Congratulations to the McIntosh Aeronautics team of Peachtree City, Georgia, on winning the UAS4STEM Nationals earlier this month! The Sato Dragons team of Long Beach, California, took second, and the St. Mary’s Civil Air Patrol team of Hollywood, Maryland, finished third. Lucila Zurita was the recipient of the Dewey O. Broberg Scholarship. The contest took place at the International Aeromodeling Center in Muncie, Indiana. Ten teams competed in the contest. These teams qualified for the national contest by winning regional contests held across the country. Another false alarm and more anti-drone media panic... as a bizarre story about two kids walking home from school were widely reported to have been followed by a drone. The cops got involved, the media went nuts... and the ultimate truth was the fact that a friend of the kids walking home were seeing a drone being flown, innocently, by one of their friends. This thing got out of hand when Escalon, CA, police received a report of the drone following two boys as they walked home from school from a mother of one of them. The aircraft reportedly followed the boys for a short distance and coming within a few feet of the boys before flying away. But... the truth was that the drone was apparently being operated by another boy who was using it to look at a construction site with several of his friends. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
