Aero-TV: In Praise of Alabama’s Patriot Aircraft USA

“Ain’t Your Daddy’s Super Cub”—Don Wade

Co-owned by Don and Ron Wade—the former of Don’s Dream Machines, a storied Alabama Continental and Lycoming engine shop—Patriot Aircraft USA is the proud maker of the Super Patriot, an eminently capable and stylish backcountry STOL airplane patterned, after a fashion, on Piper’s iconic J-3 Cub.

Of the company over which he presides, Patriot Aircraft USA president Don Wade states: “Patriot Aircraft stands as a proud symbol of unyielding adventure, freedom, and unwavering American values. With every flight, we embody the audacity to explore the vast unknown, the indomitable spirit of liberty, and the unyielding pursuit of our wildest dreams. Our bespoke aircraft represent the courage that has carried generations through the sky, defying limitations and embracing the thrill of the unknown. With our wings into the wind, we are, for the uncharted.”

Produced at Patriot Aircraft’s facility on the Yellowhammer State’s Bibb County Airport (0A8), the Super Patriot is a remarkable machine, the design ethos of which clearly evinces up-prioritization of cockpit ergonomics and overall flying experience. The aircraft’s architects began with an epoxy-coated, 4130 Super Cub-style trellis frame to which they bolted durable, lightweight wings sporting oversized, STOL-friendly flaps, and a conventional (tail-wheel) undercarriage.

To deliver upon the Wades’ promise of a superior flying experience, the Super Patriot is powered by a custom, 176-horsepower Lycoming IO 320 engine that breathes and fires by way of an Air Flow Performance fuel injection system and E-Mags. To impel the Super Patriot aloft, the mill turns a 72-inch, three-blade, Whirlwind constant-speed propeller. Powerplant and propeller collectively motivate the Super Patriot to feats of performance the likes of one-hundred-foot takeoff-rolls and sea-level climb-rates in the neighborhood of 2,500-feet-per-minute.

By way of avionics the Super Patriot features Dynon’s SkyView HDX glass panel, a stereo intercom system with pilot and co-pilot headset jacks, ADS-B Out and In, a backup battery, a hybrid AOA/pitot probe, full-suite engine monitoring, a vertical power management system, and dual USBs.

Creature comforts include dual flight controls, electric stabilizer trim, dual toe-brakes, adjustable front and rear seats, removable rear seats, lap-belts and inertia-reel shoulder harnesses, cloth interior, cabin and rear cabin heat, dual swing-out windows, cabin fresh air vents, tinted skylight and windows, and detented cabin heat, mixture, and defrost cables.

The Super Patriot P-19 MkII’s $315,900 base-price includes Dynon’s glass panel, 3x3 gear, upgraded torque tubes, and LED lighting). Options range from the prosaic to the lavish and include: titanium landing gear, Acme suspension, Berringer wheels and brakes, custom interior fabrics, Dynon’s G3X panel, and a Garmin two-axis autopilot with AP head.
