California Pacific Airlines Says It Could Be Flying Soon

But Others Are Not As Optimistic About The Timeline

California Pacific Airlines first applied for an air carrier certificate in 2010, but has been plagued by delays because that initial application was denied by the FAA, and other issues.

But now the Carlsbad-based airline which hopes to start flying in ERJ-135 airplanes, says that it is within about four months of beginning regular service.

But the San Diego Union Tribune reports that not everyone is as optimistic about that timeline. San Diego County recently rejected an application from the carrier because it was missing a project description. The environmental assessment process may also take longer than airline thinks, according to the paper. San Diego County spokeswoman Alex Bell said last week that the environmental approval could take six to eight months to work its way through the system.

California Pacific Airlines founder Ted Vallas says that about $18 - $20 million has already been spent trying to get the airline up and operating. It has announced that it was near ready to begin operations several times in the past, but has not yet flown its first revenue flight.

The airline plans to fly to San Jose, Oakland, Sacramento, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Cabo San Lucas.

The airline says it will hold a news conference in about two weeks with more information about its plans.
