Sichuan Airlines Pilot Feted For Emergency Landing

Cockpit Window Shattered In Flight, Co-Pilot Nearly Pulled Out Of The Aircraft

Sichuan Airlines pilot Liu Chuanjian has been awarded the equivalent of about $777,000 for his actions following an incident aboard his airliner May 14 that saw his co-pilot pulled about halfway out of the airplane.

Liu has been given the title of "Hero Captain of China's Civil Aviation", according the the Xinhua News Agency. Fox News reports that the co-pilot and other members of the flight crew were also give cash awards for their actions during the flight.

Liu was flying an Airbus A319 with 119 passengers aboard en route to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, when a windshield panel cracked and shattered at 32,000 feet. The co-pilot, who was wearing a seatbelt, was reportedly pulled about halfway out of the airplane due to the rapid decompression. However, he suffered only minor injuries, according to the report.

Liu made an emergency landing. None of the passengers was injured in the incident.
