Classic Aero-TV At SnF21: The 915 Bristell Makes A Splash At Sun ‘n Fun

Lou Mancuso Speaks About His Experience With The Aircraft

At the end of Sun ‘N Fun 2021, we had the opportunity to speak with Lou Mancuso about his experience flying the 915 Bristell and what the future holds for the aircraft. Mancuso says that the 915 light sport Bristell was the only light sport that has been able to qualify with the Rotax 915 iS engine.

“The last time I flew it I went from 400 feet to 18000 feet in 12 minutes with an average 1500 feet a minute climb all the way up there, and when I was at 18000 I was still getting 1400 feet a minute climb,” Mancuso says.

“I couldn’t stop smiling for the whole day, and when I looked at my true airspeed of 118 and my ground speed of 160, and my true airspeed of 242 knots, I was really grinning,” he continued.

Seven had been sold from September 2020 to Sun 'n Fun at the time of the interview, with more on order in the coming months. Mancuso emphasized the importance of safety, reliability and dependability when moving forward with sales.

The 915 iS Sport is an evolved version of the 912 iS sport, resulting in a stronger gearbox, and smoother engine mount design that causes less vibration and limiting the chance of any stacked exhaust cracks. The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is set up differently giving it more fuel for more cooling, and the intercooler is bringing temperatures down so it can be operated without any thermal issues.

Bristell is working on a high-wing version which perhaps will be shown next year in 2022, and a four seat plane that could be revealed in five years.
