While the recent drop in oil prices has been welcomed by drivers and other users of petroleum products, it has also suppressed the market for oil production support equipment, such as helicopters used in offshore exploration for oil.

That, along with a softer market for international military products, means that Sikorsky has sent layoff notices to some 1,400 workers, over 700 from its Coatesville, Pennsylvania facility, alone. Marines and sailors have worked together since May 18 to conduct Operational Testing 1, they call it OT-1, to assess the integration of the F-35B Lightning-II at sea aboard the USS Wasp. Tavares, Florida identifies itself as "America's Seaplane City", and in an effort to bolster that image, the City Council is proposing to waive impact fees for new seaplane businesses that locate in the city. Impact fees are generally collected from a business or developer to help offset the costs of constructing new infrastructure associated with the business. The Orlando Sentinel reports that the impact fees for a seaplane business in Tavares can be as high as $40,000. All this... and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
