Chinese Airline Selects Rockwell Collins Avionics For Its 737-800s

Fleet Will Include Programmable Inflight Entertainment

Aero-News has learned Shandong Airlines selected a suite of Rockwell Collins avionics for 18 Boeing 737-800 aircraft. This purchase includes the MultiScan Hazard Detection System, Model 4000 Head-Up Guidance System (HGS) and Programmable Audio Video Entertainment System (PAVES). Deliveries are scheduled for 2007 through 2009.

"This selection strengthens our solid relationship with Shandong Airlines and marks our commitment to continue expanding our presence in Asia," says Jeff Standerski, vice president and general manager of Air Transport Systems for Rockwell Collins.

Rockwell Collins' WXR-2100 is the first and only radar that analyzes and determines actual weather hazards, not simply atmospheric moisture content. MultiScan is a fully automatic, hands-free airborne radar system with more than four years of operational experience that reduces pilot workload and enhances safety and passenger comfort by minimizing unexpected turbulence encounters, and provides optimal clutter-free weather detection from the nose of the aircraft to 320 nautical miles.

With the Model 4000 HGS (shown above), Shandong Airlines' pilots see critical flight information in their forward field of view. Aircraft flight path and acceleration symbols and command guidance appear overlaying the outside scene allowing precision hand-flown approaches, enhancing situational awareness and improving aircraft energy management.

Additional features include the display of runway remaining information, tailstrike avoidance and unusual attitude recovery symbology. The Model HGS 4000 also provides a platform for new technologies, such as enhanced vision and surface guidance, which will further improve safety of operations.

Shandong Airlines also selected PAVES. PAVES provides Shandong Airlines with overhead video on 10.4-inch retractable liquid crystal displays featuring wide viewing angles and crisp picture quality. The system offers 22 channels of digital in-seat audio programming. PAVES enables airlines to provide passengers a variety of entertainment options that utilize available flying time.

Other products chosen by Shandong Airlines include: GLU-920 Multi Mode Receiver (MMR), the Airshow news and information service, ADF-900 Automatic Direction Finder, CPL-920D Coupling Unit,  VOR-900 VHF Omnidirectional Radio, DFA-901 Direction Finding Antenna, DME-900 Distance Measuring Equipment, HFS-900 and HFS-900D High Frequency Systems, PAU-700 Passenger Address Unit, LRA-900 Low-range Radio Altimeter, VHF-920 Very High Frequency Transceiver, TPR-901 Mode S Transponder, and TCAS Traffic Alert Collision Avoidance System.
