AMA Drone Report 02.27.20: 30K+ RID NPRM Responses!, RID V GA?, FAA DAC

William Zerby... Joel Keller... Sam Ackerman... These are but three of the 30000 names that are attached to overwhelmingly critical comments over the FAA’s misguided Remote ID NPRM.

Spurred on by AMA, EAA and most other entities with an interest in the future of model aviation, if not all of aviation, the aviation community is coming together, aggressively. They are fighting what most consider to be draconian and unnecessary rule-making that would destroy much of the model aviation world... and further damage an entry level path to the full-scale aviation world. The final deadline for commentary occurs on March 2nd, despite some prominent attempts to get an extended deadline -- leaving us with just a few more days to make sure the FAA knows how badly they’ve miscalculated the issue. The FAA's Drone Remote ID NPRM is raising red flags among some in the General Aviation community, particularly when it comes to what is perceived as a path to airspace user fees for GA. Remote ID would share information such as aircraft location, speed and altitude as well as pilot location. Remote ID would be required for anyone operating a drone in the NAS, with a few exceptions. But the data transmitted from the aircraft would be collected by a third-party UAS Service Supplier (USS) which would store it for 6 months. The data would be transmitted over the Internet and be available to the FAA or law enforcement for six months. All of this is much like ADS-B ... except that the USS would charge a monthly fee. DoT has appointed two new members to the FAA's Drone Advisory Committee (DAC). The new members are Christian Ramsey, President of uAvionix Corp., headquartered in Bigfork, MT, and Lee Moak, founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Moak Group in Washington, D.C. They were appointed on February 5, 2020. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
