Airborne 09.27.19: Airbus H145 Tops Andes, Continental's New Digs, Meyers 200

Also: CloudAhoy Pro, Sonaca Aircraft, Boeing And Air New Zealand, Doors-Off Helicopter Accident

Airbus’ H145 has set its skids down on the Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Southern Hemisphere, culminating at 22,840 feet.

This is the first time a twin-engine helicopter has landed at this altitude. The conditions for this mission were extreme, due to the atmospheric conditions in the area and the winter season. The aircraft took off from Mendoza, Argentina, flew 30 minutes to the foot of the Aconcagua where it began its ascension. After 15 minutes of climbing, the helicopter landed at 1:45 p.m. local time on the summit, at a temperature of -22ºC. The crew onboard the helicopter consisted of Alexander Neuhaus, experimental test pilot and Antoine van Gent, experimental flight test engineer. It was pretty obvious from interviews over the last year that engine building giant, Continental, (now rebranded as Continental Aerospace Technologies) was investing heavily in the future... and with more than just their pocketbooks... Most recently; Continental held a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to publicly unveil their new, state of the art, 275,000 square foot manufacturing facility. Continental announced the $75 million investment as a part of the "Blue Marlin" -- which includes a $45 million investment in new manufacturing equipment. Appearing in the movie “You Only Live Twice”, James Bond is restrained in the back seat of a Meyers 200 airplane as the pilot villainess sets the plane on fire before bailing out. Mr. Bond, of course, escapes and lands the smoking, spiraling plane just before incineration. While that airplane is history, the FAA certification and manufacturing assets to build the Meyers 200 live on. In fact, they’re now listed for sale. Although the speedy, 4-seat, general aviation plane is no longer in production, it offers a fast-track to the buyer wishing to enter the market with a minimum of FAA certification hurdles, which today can easily approach $100 million. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
