Aero-TV: EVAS Raises Awareness on Cockpit Smoke

Hosts Smoke Demonstrator at 2024 NBAA-BACE Display

For nearly 30 years, the Emergency Vision Assurance System (EVAS) has been working to raise awareness on one of aviation’s most hazardous, yet least discussed issues: blinding smoke events in the cockpit. As a part of its continued effort to show the significance of EVAS, the company hosted a smoke demonstrator at its 2024 NBAA-BACE exhibit.

FAA reports show that in-flight fires are a frequent cause of unscheduled and emergency landings. While it is a common belief that putting on the provided oxygen mask and goggles will be enough to get on the ground safely, EVAS has proved otherwise.

EVAS’s 2024 NBAA-BACE display included a real-world demonstrator that filled up with smoke, allowing users to see what the cockpit could look like during a fire. Participants reported that their instruments and front window were completely obscured, making navigation a challenge.

EVAS is specifically designed for situations of in-flight fires. When in use, it displaces smoke to give pilots the visual references necessary to execute a safe emergency landing.

“What a pilot will tell you is one of their worst fears is ever having smoke, fire, fumes in their aircraft,” stated Chris Skurat, VP of OEM and Strategic Partnerships at EVAS. “EVAS displaces that smoke and allows and gives them a clear tunnel of vision so they can see their instrument panel and their flight path.”

Almost 80% of the worldwide cargo fleet, including UPS, FedEx, and Atlas Air, now utilize EVAS.
