Milestone: Robinson Manufactures 4,000th R22 Helicopter

As the year came to a close, Robinson Helicopter Company completed another milestone in 2005; delivery of its 4,000th R22 helicopter. Thirty years after test flying the first R22, himself, Frank Robinson presented the keys of ship S/N 4000 to John Skeen of Heliflite, Australia. This ship is one of approximately 400 R22 helicopters used in Australia for various tasks including flight training and cattle herding.

Developed with the idea of creating a small, low-cost, reliable, and high performance helicopter, the first R22 prototype was completed in 1975 and received its FAA Type Certificate in 1979. The helicopter soon became the world’s top-selling civilian helicopter and holds world records for speed and altitude within its weight class.

Sticking to the original concept and incorporating many refinements, the R22 has remained one of the top-selling civilian and training helicopters. As a result, Robinson Helicopter Company is the world’s leading manufacturer of civil helicopters.
