'The Hardest Working Guy In GA Talks About Life At The Helm Of
AOPA'
As part of our 2007 end-of-year wrap-up, ANN posited that if
AOPA (as the world's largest pilot's association), is the 600 pound
gorilla of aero-organizations; then there should be little question
that AOPA President, Phil Boyer, ranks as 'King Kong.' Humorous as
that title might be, the description is pretty much on target when
you measure the man against the job he has done for the 415,000++
members of the AOPA -- and aviators, in general.
Throughout the industry, few will doubt that Phil Boyer is one
of the hardest working guys in GA... if not in all of aviation.
Phil has been a tireless advocate for the value of GA, and an
aggressive soldier in the fight against all those who would deprive
us of the freedoms and privileges we have as flyers. Still, it was
the battle over User Fees where Phil Boyer identified himself as a
"scrapper" and a guy who would not quit... and aviation benefited
greatly from having a watchdog at the ready.
Phil is a thoroughly unique character on the general aviation
scene... he's personable, professional, thoroughly in charge, and
yet has the talent to delegate tasks amongst his troops
aggressively so that things that need attention get done -- and get
done 'right now.' I've worked with this guy for a number of years
-- I've seen him elated, I've seen him angry, I've seen him
frustrated, and I've seen him attacked from a number of corners...
but I've never seen him beaten -- not even for the slightest
moment... and despite the fact that GA has been fighting some of
the biggest challenges we've known in years, Boyer not only is
ready for the fight -- he seems more specifically suited to
this task than anyone we know.
Phil Boyer became President of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots
Association on January 1, 1991, adding onto a career as a
senior-level broadcasting executive and general aviation (GA)
advocate. A 7,000+ hour instrument and ME-rated pilot, Phil has
been flying for more than 30 years, and 15 of them as an aircraft
owner. In addition, Boyer is President of the International Council
of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations (IAOPA), representing
pilots and aircraft operators in 66 countries.
ANN and Aero-TV sat down with him for an interview during the
recent 2008 AOPA Fly-IN and talked with him about his first days as
president of AOPA, the value of the organization, the ongoing
mission of AOPA and all manner of GA topics... We thing you'll
enjoy eh insight into a fascinating man... and a guy who has left
an indelible mark on the countenance of the aviation world.

OK, folks, so far, so good... earlier this year
we initiated the first feature programming series for
Aero-TV... we decided to take it slow, but we also tried
a steady approach to building the aviation world's most
innovative news and information service. We hope you
understand that this is the most complex media program we've
ever undertaken and what you're seeing is just the tip of the
iceberg... but from here on out, we will be doing our best to
educate, inform, and entertain YOU about all aspects of the
exciting worlds of aviation and aerospace.

If you've been an observer of the media and associated media
industries over the last few years, it's not hard to mistake the
fact that a massive revolution is taking place. Old sources for
news and information are falling by the wayside, having to change
their modus operandi or risk obsolescence (or extinction).
Electronic media and print media are both under the assault of
progress, and the online world has been a cornerstone for
revolutionary change.
Part of this amazing process is the fact that we're been
building and planning a massive new organization within ANN. That
said,
we're hiring talented new people as fast as we can find
them (a far more difficult task than we had
imagined -- REALLY good people are hard to find), and we're
brainstorming at speeds that would make a deorbiting Space Shuttle
feel like a slug. Suffice it to say that we wanted to do this
right, rather than right-now, and that the development of this
program has been the most carefully pursued undertaking we've ever
undertaken.
