Evergreen Wants To Expand Pinal Air Park Facility

Company Turning Away Business For Lack Of Hangar Space

Evergreen Air Center, a division of Evergreen International which performs a variety of services related to heavy aircraft maintenance, storage and disassembly, has asked three counties surrounding its Pinal Air Park (AZ) facility -- Marana, Tucson and Pima -- to provide it with funding in the form of delayed interest loans for the purpose of expanding its capacity.

The company wants to build a new hangar and associated workshops at the airport which would be capable of handling large aircraft work that the company has been turning away due to lack of space.

Evergreen is asking the three counties to participate equally in the request, to the tune of $5 million each. In exchange, the company estimates the facility would create up to 350 jobs, nearly 70 percent of which would go to local residents. Supporting the company's estimate is the fact that the workforce at that facility is already composed of 70 to 80 percent local residents.

Michael F. Melvin, Evergreen's VP Finance, told the Arizona Daily Star that the problems that airlines have been suffering since 9/11 has created a very large quantity of work for companies like Evergreen which are equipped to handle the storage and heavy maintenance requirements for large airlines. He added that it is his belief that if Evergreen cannot handle the additional business, someone else will.
