All 62 On Board Fatally Injured, Flight Recorders Badly Damaged

A FlyDubai Boeing 737-800 went down Saturday at the Rostov-on-Don airport in Russia. According to the Russian Federation Interstate Aviation Committee, all 62 persons aboard ... 55 passengers and 7 crewmembers ... were fatally injured in the accident.

An investigation team has been appointed to examine the accident. It will include representatives from the United Arab Emirates experts as well as the U.S. in its capacity as the state of design and manufacture of the Boeing.

In a statement posted on its website, the Russian MAK-IAC reported that the aircraft's data and voice recorders were recovered on March 20 local time, and were found to be badly damaged.

The IAC Laboratory experts together with UAE and BEA (France) representatives have performed the preparation work on the extraction of the memory modules from the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), as well as the data readout. The preliminary analysis shows that the recorder was operational in flight, and was recording the flight data up until the aircraft impacted terrain. The quality of recording is said to be satisfactory. The experts have begun the process of decoding and analyzing the data.

The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) shows mechanical damages. According to the report, the data cable was destroyed. An X-ray examination of the memory module and interface cable was performed. The recovery of the interface cable is still underway, and the condition of the non-volatile memory module is still being determined.
