Former Government Affairs Senior Director Succeeds Chad Budreau

On April 28, the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) named Tyler Dobbs as its new Executive Director. He previously served as a part of the organization’s Government Affairs team and will now replace Chad Budreau in a higher role.

AMA is a nonprofit community of hobbyists that come together over a love for designing, building, and flying model aircraft of all shapes and sizes. Its nationwide network supports flying fields, learning opportunities, friendly competitions, and safe environments for club activities.

Chad Budreau took over as Executive Director of AMA in 2018, but had been an important part of the community for around 9 years prior. Last October, AMA announced that Budreau would be leaving the organization to ‘pursue new opportunities,’ but would remain working with Senior Government Affairs Director Tyler Dobbs until December to ensure a smooth transition.

The organization placed Dobbs in the interim Executive Director position while it searched for Budreau’s replacement, but ultimately made the decision permanent and gave him the formal title in April 2025. He has been with AMA for almost 10 years, with Government Affairs Senior Director being his most recent leadership role.

“Tyler has long demonstrated an unwavering passion for model aviation and a strong commitment to the AMA’s members,” expressed AMA President Rich Hanson. “His experience working with policymakers, his strategic vision, and his hands-on knowledge of our community make him the ideal leader to guide the AMA as we continue to protect, promote, and grow the hobby we all love.”

Dobbs will now be part of the guiding force for AMA operations, including membership services, outreach, safety initiatives, and community advocacy efforts. He will also work to strengthen the organization’s partnerships with other industry groups, youth teams, and government agencies.

“I am honored and excited to step into the role of Executive Director,” Dobbs stated. “The AMA has been a part of my life for many years, and I am deeply committed to serving our members and ensuring a vibrant future for model aviation. Together with our incredible staff, volunteers, and members, I look forward to continuing the work of preserving and advancing this great hobby.”
