Buddhist Monks Criticized For YouTube BizJet Video

Shows Monks Flying On A Private Jet

A video appearing on YouTube has spurred a reprimand for a group of Thai Buddhist Monks from their national organization.

In the video, several monks in orange robes are seen on board a private jet. They are wearing modern aviator sunglasses, and at least one appears to have a pair of wireless headphones, which he hands to another monk on the plane.

The monks are reportedly from Thailand, according to the Associated Press. The Office of National Buddhism said that they became aware of the video earlier this year, and warned the monks that the "lavish behavior" is not to be repeated.

Office of National Buddhism director-general Nopparat Benjawatananun said the monks in the video were acting in an inappropriate manner, "not composed and not adhering to Buddha's teachings of simplicity and self-restraint."

Last year some 300 monks and novices in Thailand, which has the world's largest Buddhist population, were reprimanded, and in some extreme cases removed from their monkhood for misconduct. It was a small fraction of the over 61,000 Buddhist monks and novices in that country.
