Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport Set For Runway Expansion

Project Will Lengthen Runway By 1,700 Feet, Cost $25 Million

Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport will be getting a project underway next week that will lengthen the airport's runway to the tune of $25 million.

Runway 5-23 will be lengthened by about 1,700 feet to nearly 6,000 feet. Safety zones will be extended on both ends of the runway.

Airport director Darwin Simpson told goupstate.com that the runway safety zone is out of compliance with FAA safety standards. He said the main reason for the project is to improve safety both for aircraft using the runway and those using the airport or living nearby.

The project also will involve resurfacing the entire runway, and upgrading the airport's lighting system and navigation aids.

The FAA is funding 90 percent of the project through an AIP grant. The S.C. Aeronautics Commission and the city are each contributing five percent to the effort.
