Piedmont Triad International Airport Program Wins ACEC Award

Construction Management Project Also Recognized

The American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina (ACEC-NC) recently honored Michael Baker Engineering as a 2011 Engineering Excellence Honors award winner for the Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTIA) Development Program, and Program and Construction Management Services for the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority (PTAA).

The program consisted of the development of the FedEx Mid-Atlantic Hub site, the construction of Runway 5L-23R, the construction of Taxiway E, the extension of Taxiway K to serve the new FedEx site, relocation of Bryan Boulevard, implementation of ancillary projects, permitting, and environmental mitigation efforts. The program was implemented to allow for the development of the FedEx Mid-Atlantic Hub facility and provide the infrastructure to allow for the expanded operations created by FedEx and the increased traffic expected by a growing economic engine that the new FedEx facility is expected to provide.

The completed program is expected to create many jobs in the Piedmont Triad region. The region has seen a reduction in jobs associated with declines in the tobacco, textile, and furniture industries over the past several decades. It is expected that the presence of the new FedEx Mid-Atlantic Hub at PTIA will spur additional development in the region by companies that seek to take advantage of the facility in order to meet increasingly tight logistics demands in the economy. This will increase the region’s capacity and ability to serve as transportation crossroads.
