Gone West: Roscoe D. Morton

Was 'Chairman Of Announcers' For EAA, On Sun 'N' Fun Board Of Directors

Roscoe D. Morton, who was well known as the Chairman of the Announcers for EAA at AirVenture and Sun 'N' Fun in Lakeland, FL, passed away June 15th at his home in Frostproof, FL. He was 81 years old.

According to an obituary posted by the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales, FL, Morton was born December 10, 1931 in Elk Falls, KS. He first soloed an airplane at age 15, and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

Morton had been an ag pilot and flight instructor before beginning an airline career in 1959 with Southern Airways, which later became Delta Airlines. He retired as a Boeing 747 International Captain.

In his retirement, Morton was well known as the lead announcer at EAA's AirVenture, as well as Sun 'N' Fun in Lakeland, FL, where he served on the Sun 'N' Fun board of directors. He received numerous awards over the years, including the EAA President's Award in 2009.

Morton is survived by his wife of 11 years, Virginia “Jinny” Morton; son, Roscoe J. and wife, Lisa Morton of Commerce, MI; sister, Suzanne M. Wyatt of Fort Worth, TX; and three grandchildren, Taylor, Madison and Will.
