Strike Bytes: Air France Pilots

The four-day strike by Air France pilots grounded some 200 of the carrier's scheduled flights on Sunday, making a dent in the schedule, but hardly crippling the airline -- in line with expectations of all but the pilots' union.

A three-union consortium, led by 600-pound gorilla SNPL, wants higher pay.

The strike is scheduled to last through Wednesday; but as each day passes, travelers and the airline are better-able to cope. Odds for the pilots' getting more money, when the demand for their services is shrinking, are low. Sunday was the pilots' best shot; and they were able to stop just about one flight in nine -- inconvenient, but far from crucial.

The SNPL union led a ten-day strike against Air France in 1998, which resulted in most pilots' wages' actually being cut. Some think the lot of the industry, right now, is not amenable to such extra economic demands.
