AMA Drone Report 01.18.18: 1 Million Drone Reg's, Autel EVO, FAA Sued

Also: New DJI Mavic?, SureFly Not Yet, Drones Tracking Illegal Dumping, 'Illicit' Drone Video

The FAA has registered a million drones, the DOT announced last week at CES in Las Vegas, with the vast majority of them being used for recreational purposes.

Speaking at CES 2018, SecTrans Elaine Chao said the 1,000,000 total registration figure includes 878,000 hobbyists, who receive one identification number for all the drones they own, and 122,000 commercial, public and other drones, which are individually registered. In addition to being required by law, the registration process helps educate drone operators who are new to aviation by having them agree to the FAA’s operating rules and increases airspace security by identifying drones with their owner. Autel Robotics USA has announced its new flagship aircraft line, the EVO. EVO is a portable camera drone with foldable arms and a sleek, compact form factor. The drone was introduced last week at CES 2018. The EVO will be equipped with a 4K UHD camera on a 3-Axis Gimbal. EVO’s camera records high definition footage at 60 fps. Rear and front sensors let EVO fly with multiple intelligent flight modes and obstacle avoidance. EVO’s controller has a built-in 3.3 inch OLED screen with live HD dual band transmission and a 7KM range. The FAA has been hit with another lawsuit over its drone registration database, and this time the agency is facing nearly $840 million in penalties. Drone attorney Jonathan Rupprecht writes that the case has been brought by Robert Taylor -- the brother of John Taylor, who won a case against the FAA that temporarily suspended the FAA's drone registration requirement. Rupprecht says that this case is a Class Action suit of at least 836,796 members. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
