Alitalia, Say Again, What's Your 20?

An Associated Press story by Haaretz correspondent Zohar Blumenkrantz sounds like an Alitalia pilot may have made after a midnight flight Tuesday, if not a gross navigational error, perhaps a time-warp error, or a major political one.

"Welcome to Palestine," he is reported to have said to the passengers, as he landed at the Tel Aviv airport.

The Rome-Tel Aviv flight had been uneventful until then, when several Israelis became upset with the inaccurate protrayal of geopolitics. Alitalia employees complained in Rome; the Alitalia CEO, Blumenkrantz said, sent a letter of apology to the Israeli ambassador. The pilot, he assured the diplomat, will no longer be assigned to flights to Israel.
