NASA to Host Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Meeting

Live Coverage of 31 May Meeting Planned

On 12 May 2023 NASA announced it will hold a public meeting during which the agency’s independent study team will categorize and evaluate data pertaining to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP)—a neologism coined by buffoons to replace the more broadly-known and accurate Unidentified Flying Object (UFO).

The meeting, to be held Wednesday, 31 May 2023 at 10:30 EDT, will conclude with a media teleconference.

NASA defines UAP as observations of events in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena from a scientific perspective. The focus of the upcoming public meeting is to hold final deliberations prior to the publishing of a report compiled by the agency’s independent study team—a body comprising 16 experts representing diverse scientific disciplines germane to the study of unidentified anomalous phenomena.

Among NASA’s stated but largely unpursued priorities is the business of devising means by which to evaluate and study UAP by dint of data, technology, and the tools of contemporary science.

The independent study team’s soon-to-be-published report is not a review or assessment of previous unidentifiable observations. Rather, it sets out to inform NASA and ostensibly the public of data that could henceforth be collected for purpose of shedding light on the nature and origins of UAP.

In accordance with the Federal Advisory Committee Act, the 31 May meeting will occasion opportunity for public comment. NASA will commence accepting questions from the general public on Friday, 12 May at 10:00 EDT.

To better facilitate public comment, NASA has set up a web page containing numerous questions common to UAP phenomena. 

Participants in the post-meeting media teleconference—the live audio of which NASA will stream on its website at 15:00 EDT—include:

  • Dan Evans, assistant deputy associate administrator for research, NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.
  • David Spergel, president, Simons Foundation and Chair of NASA’s UAP independent study team.
  • Assorted members of the UAP independent study team.

NASA recently commissioned a nine-month study to examine UAP from a number of scientific perspectives and devise guiding principles and procedures by which extant data and scientific tools and techniques may be effectively plied to advancing humankind’s understanding of UAP.

To date, a prevailing paucity of high-quality photos and films of UAP has rendered comprehensive scientific investigation thereof a virtual impossibility. By convening an independent study team and tasking it with a nine-month investigation of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, NASA artfully connotes the U.S. federal government’s stance vis-à-vis UAP is one of transparency.
