Pilots operating in
central and southern Florida need to pay extra attention to NOTAMs
this week. The FAA has published NOTAMs establishing a 30-nm-radius
TFR for President Bush's trip to Miami and Tampa, Florida. In
addition, an existing TFR will remain in effect over Los Angeles
until 2100 local on Friday, June 27. They extend up to but not
including 18,000 feet.
The Miami TFR is centered near the Orange Bowl stadium, 7.9 nm
from the Dolphin (DHP) VOR on the 099 radial, and will be in effect
from 1120 local until 1430 local on Monday, June 30.
The Tampa TFR is centered on Tampa International Airport, 9.0 nm
from the St. Petersburg (PIE) VOR on the 062 radial, and will be in
effect from 1700 local until 2000 local on Monday, June 30.
In all TFR areas, all aircraft operations within a 0-10 nm
radius are prohibited, except as described in the NOTAM. Aircraft
operating within a 10-30 nm radius must be on an active IFR or VFR
flight plan, must be in constant radio contact with air traffic
control (ATC), and must be transmitting a discrete ATC-assigned
transponder code. All aircraft operations are limited to aircraft
arriving or departing local airfields, but ATC may authorize
transit operations. Aircraft may not loiter.
Affected Airports--Tampa:
Tampa International (TPA), Peter O.
Knight (TPF), and St. Petersburg-Clearwater
International (PIE) airports all fall within the 0-10 nm
ring and will effectively be closed to general aviation traffic for
the duration of the TFR.
Vandenberg (VDF), Clearwater
Airpark (CLW), Albert Whitted (SPG),
Tampa North Aero Park (X39), Plant City
Municipal (PCM), Airport Manatee (48X),
Pilot Country (X05), Zephyrhills
Municipal (ZPH), South Lakeland (X49),
and Lakeland Linder Regional (LAL) airports all
fall within the 10-30 nm ring and will need to follow the flight
plan/squawk-and-talk rules outlined in the NOTAM.
In addition, operations at Hernando County
Airport (BKV), which is less than 1 nm outside of the TFR,
will be impacted.
Affected Airports--Miami:
Miami Heliport (X48), Miami
SPB (X44), Miami International (MIA), and
Opa Locka (OPF) airports all fall within the 0-10
nm ring and will effectively be closed to general aviation traffic
for the duration of the TFR.
North Perry (HWO), Kendall-Tamiami
Executive (TMB), Opa Locka West (X46),
Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood International (FLL),
Downtown Ft. Lauderdale Heliport (DT1),
Motorsports Complex EMS Heliport (MC4),
Motorsports Complex VIP Heliport (VI2),
Ft. Lauderdale Executive (FXE), Homestead
General Aviation (X51), and Pompano Beach
Airpark (PMP) airports all fall within the 10-30 nm ring
and will need to follow the flight plan/squawk-and-talk rules
