F-16 Down In Arizona, Pilot's Fate Unknown

Training Mission Took Off From Luke AFB

Little is known at this time about the status of the pilot of a single-seat F-16C that crashed Friday afternoon northwest of Phoenix, AZ.

The Associated Press reports the F-16 went down around noon local time, south of Alamo Lake -- a training range about 80 miles of the Phoenix metroplex. A rescue helicopter was dispacted to the scene, but US Air Force officials aren't saying whether the pilot has been located.

The fighter wasn't carrying any weapons, according to Luke Air Force Base spokeswoman Mary Jo May. The base is the world's largest F-16 training site, with about 185 planes.

The accident is the third to strike the base since 2006. In April of that year, a pilot ejected from an F-16 following engine failure on takeoff. Nine months later, a two-seat F-16D crashed on a training mission in southwestern Arizona, forcing the pilots onboard to eject safely.

The cause of Friday's loss is unknown at this time.
