More Anti-Aviation Politics: Naples Airport Makes Noise Complaints… Easier?

Airport Authority Builds an App For Grievances – Convenient, if a Little Curious

Naples Airport Authority (NAA) is taking a modern twist on addressing community concerns with a new mobile app for noise complaints. Developed with EnviroSuite, the app allows users to report aircraft noise events directly from their smartphones.

The app is compatible with both iOS and Android. By creating an account, users can save their details for one-tap submissions, avoiding repetitive data entry. It complements the airport’s existing tools, which include a hotline and web form.

Naples residents haven’t held back on expressing frustration about noise from aircraft flying over the city’s beaches, downtown areas, and restaurants. With over 123,000 takeoffs and landings in 2024, complaints have only grown louder about an airport that was likely there long before they were. The NAA has faced demands to move the airport or even shut it down, prompting a $2 million FAA noise study that outlined potential abatement measures.

Critics might find the app an ironic gesture, effectively encouraging real-time complaints. Yet, it aligns with the NAA’s broader efforts to engage with the community. The authority’s partnership with EnviroSuite also enhances flight tracking and integrates existing noise monitoring systems.

While some residents prefer third-party tools like Airnoise, the NAA argues that its app is free and offers more detailed reporting options. It’s part of a wider initiative to address noise challenges and improve communication with the community. The authority plans to implement other noise mitigation measures approved in its FAA study.

"We just wanted to provide an easy and free alternative to the public," stated Zachary Burch, the NAA’s Senior Communications and Community Engagement Manager. "The new system also streamlines web form option as well so that there are fewer required fields and people can create an account so that those fields will be auto filled."

Whether you find it commendable or odd, the app represents a step toward balancing air travel’s demands with the concerns of Naples residents—one mobile complaint at a time.
