Association’s Sixth Head Since 1970 Founding
James A. Viola is officially the new President and CEO of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, the sixth leader of the association since it was founded 55 years ago in 1970.
Mr. Viola said, “It is a privilege and an honor to be able to lead such an impactful global organization that is known for the great work it does on behalf of the general aviation industry. I look forward to working with our membership to continue to advocate for policies and regulations that allow for the industry to grow, flourish and advance innovation.
“While this is an exciting time for our industry there is still a lot of work to be done to meet new and ongoing challenges. It is important that we continue to illustrate the robust opportunities and economic and societal benefits that our industry provides around the world. Under my leadership, I plan for GAMA to provide valuable thought leadership and continue to be a commanding and astute voice for the good of its membership and the entire industry.”
Viola had previously been the President and CEO of the Vertical Aviation International (VAI) since 2020. While at VAI he led the association’s rebranding from Helicopter Association International to VAI to widen its focus to bring in the rapidly expanding and technologically advancing field of urban air taxis and eVTOLs, generally referred to as AAM or advanced air mobility.
Prior to his role at VAI, Viola served for over ten years in the FAA in various capacities, the last one of which was Director of General Aviation Safety Assurance where he oversaw the standardization of safety oversight procedures for general aviation.
Viola was also a U.S. Army aviator for over twenty years, reaching the rank of Colonel. He has 35 years of experience in aviation, several Masters degrees including from the Stategic Studies in the U.S. Army Was College in Carlisle, Pennsyvania. He holds ATP and CFI certificates for helicopters and airplanes with a total of over 8,000 flight hours including 1,100 hours with night vision goggles.
